The Start of a New Tradition

Some time ago my sweetie and I decided to do things a little differently. Rather than exchanging birthday presents we would give adventures. We already have everything we need or want, and if some thing comes up we generally just run out and grab it, Especially with a birthday that is within a month of Christmas. This minimalistic approach to gift giving is refreshing. Rather that collecting more stuff that will collect dust. We are collecting memories that will last a life time, and building a stronger relationship through our adventures. Plus it guarantees that we will get at least two little vacations a year.

Today we set out for my birthday adventure, and yes I already have been making plans for his for his. We are about three hours out of town heading north on I-75. I have no idea where we are headed. I know it will be significantly colder than at home. I am rather concerned that in addition to a heavy winter coat and long johns, it was also requested that I bring my swim suit. But not knowing what is on the agenda just adds to the adventure.

Progression of a painting – Christmas Faerie

I often take Work In Progress (WIP) photos as I paint. I do this mostly because it helps me to see how a painting is progressing and isolate things that need attention early. Viewing my work in the photo allows me to remove myself from it some what and view it through fresh eyes.

Here is a series of photos as my Christmas Faerie painting progresses. The finished painting is 8×10 inches and was painted with watercolors on Hot Press paper.

Happy New Year.

New Years resolutions have always been a bit awkward for me. Some years I have made resolutions to stop doing this or start doing that. Sure it works well for a few days weeks or even a month. But in general I usually drop off quickly, because they resolutions were either too arbitrary or they were just not changes I was ready to make.

2013 I set out with a list of goals, rather than resolutions. i set my sights high and did continue to work towards those goals. I still do in fact. I will admit I did not accomplish most of the things that I set out to at the beginning of the year. This was in part due to other life events and also in part to just not being ready to finish some of the major projects I am working towards. In the end I would rather take my time and do things right than to push something out in a year because my New Years Resolution said so.

2013 did bring about much more personal growth than I had expected. I learned to let go of some things (both tangible and intangible) that had been weighing me down and holding me back.

That bring us to 2014. I still plan on working on some of the goals I set for myself in 2013. I also hope to continue the trend of not holding onto things that hold me back. But I am not going to make resolutions. Rather just promise myself to live life to the fullest and to seek out true happiness and live life in a manner that makes me the best person that I can be.

I am now at a point in my life where my creativity will have more potential than I have ever experienced. I have new ideas for my art and some collaborative opportunities which are exciting. I hope to have more opportunity to travel, hike and explore nature and the world around me. My adventures are always a source of inspiration for me and bring me new ideas for my art and crafts.

I plan on spending more time writing. I have had a more ideas rolling around in my head and I have quite a bit already written toward one novel. These are untapped sources of creativity that need to be paid more attention. There are other publication projects that have been in the works and on the back burner for the last few years. A better focus and let’s see what I can get accomplished in 2014.
